Champaign, OH:  I Guess, You Say, What Can Make Me Feel That Way?

I’ve got sunshine on a cloudy day…
And when it’s cold outside…
Well I’ve got the month of May..
(My Girl- The Temptations)

So, here we are again, ready to reopen this little local market of love, tonight!!

We are twirlin’ right into January, but as I left the market, tonight, after closing it, I was pleasantly surprised at how light it was, outside, AND, how warm and sunny it was!!

If I had my way, we would just glide right on, from here, to the warming up months! But, I will take what we have, right now, and be happy that it was still light at 6pm, with a ray of sun still peeking through, and a tiny bit of warmth.

It’s like how I feel about this market. It’s like walking into a ray of sunshine when I hit the market, each Thursday, to get ready to greet the vendors, and then the customers. You each add your own ray of sunshine to my day. To the market. To this local fabric that we are weaving.

One of the things that I have asked each vendor to do, is to write about what local means to them. How it feels to be one of the Rock Stars Of Local? What are they doing in this local scheme of goodness?

I will begin posting their thoughts, their passion, their hard work, their triumphs, and their heartbreaks. It’s not easy being a local producer. It’s back breaking, hard work, total dedication, open as much to failure as you are to success! We are all out there, in the trenches, fighting the good fight that we call…Local Love.

Tomorrow, I will bring to you, the thoughts from Women That Farm! Brandi sent me a very heartfelt write up, that I can hardly wait to share!

But for now, I open the market for all of you. As a customer, please think about why you shop us? Why does local matter to you? When did you decide to pledge your love? We want to hear it, and we want to see it…let us know that you love our little local market of love by placing your orders!

Local Love…our market makes loving local so much fun…

Peace, Love, Good Vibes…

Great Lakes Collagen Info

Great Lakes Gelatin (the Green can) Collagen Hydrolysate (beef kosher) Unflavored

Gelatin (also known as cooked collagen) has wonderful anti-inflammatory and anti-aging qualities, as it helps to fill in the missing amino acids (the building blocks of proteins) in the standard American diet. This is a completely different from the jiggly gelatin product most of us grew up eating as kids.

Homemade bone broth is chock full of gelatin and very nutrient dense but Great Lakes Gelatin- Collagen is a convenient way to get gelatin consistently into your diet.

What is Collagen Hydrolysate?

Hydrolyzed Collagen is the unique combination of amino acids in concentrated levels that promotes rapid re-production of blood cells for healing and conditioning over other proteins especially for bone and joint health care. This low molecular weight protein is easily digested for healthy enrichment in minutes after ingestion. It will not congeal because it has been hydrolyzed for quick assimilation and improved hydration to the connective tissue. Collagen is important to nitrogen balance, now considered an anti-aging product as it supports age related cartilage damage, and collagen loss. source: http://greatlakesgelatin.com/)

How do I use this product?
You can mix it in drinks, shakes, smoothies, or add a tablespoon to your favorite recipe to give it an anti-inflammatory protein boost. It will dissolve in cold liquids very easily.

How Much Do You Need?
Recommended dosage: Take one rounded tablespoon (10-12 g) in the morning, and the same amount before going to bed in the late evening which will help reduce appetite. This product has a low molecular weight so it will dissolve in cold, warm, or hot liquids.

Important Note: Remember not to get too carried away with gelatin. Adding too much too quickly can cause digestive issues: bloating, loss of appetite, stomach ache are just a few side effects.

It’s important to remember that more gelatin is not always better, especially if you are adding it to your diet for the first time.

Gelatin should be used in addition to a nutrient dense diet and not to replace real food like homemade bone broths and grass fed meats.

It is also really important to take this daily. You will see maximum results if you include it in your daily routine.

I have heard dozens of success stories from co-op members and my own family members. Please feel free to email me your personal testimony on your experience with this product!

CLG:  Total Crop Loss at Crimmins Family Farm

This morning I got a call from Chuck Crimmins detailing the devastation on their farm from the recent flooding. All of the hard work they put in to produce so much organic food for us was washed away in the flood. Please take a minute to read his note below.

From Crimmins Family Farm

Hello everyone. We must apologize that we will not be able to deliver your order this week, nor in the foreseeable future, and have unlisted all of our items from CLG. The recent rains put our entire field 3’ to 8’ underwater. It came up much quicker than anyone anticipated and we were very lucky to get our tractor and implements out of harms way. Unfortunately, we could not save our beehives and lost them in the floods. Although they were full of honey for overwintering and weighed ~250 lbs each, the floodwaters moved them off their blocks and carried them away. When the water receded, we found them 1/4 mile away, resting against a barbed wire fence. The force of moving water is not something to be taken lightly. Unfortunately, we could not pick up and move the vegetables. I guess it could be considered ‘funny’ but we found some of our uprooted turnips and beets in neighboring fields. Once again, the force of water!

We thank all of you for your orders, both this week and in the past, and your support of our small family farm. It really does help us out and we enjoy growing for you. Our next step is to now call a close to the old season and begin a new one.

We hope everyone is starting the new year off well and ‘dry’

Sincerely,
Chuck Crimmins
Crimmins Family Farm

The Cumming Harvest - Closed:  How The Cumming Harvest Operates

Market News

Welcome to 2016, and another year of The Cumming Harvest. This will be our 6th year in operation, and we are looking forward to many more. Many of our growers have slowed down for the winter, delivering every other week or otherwise reducing their availability. Many others, however, are still going strong thanks to greenhouses and other season-extending methods. Now that the holiday season is behind us, we’ll be open every single week.

Each year, I devote the first few mailings of the year to the behind the scenes operation of TCH. This week, I’m going to talk about the many legal issues surrounding our market. Even though many people call us “the co-op”, TCH is legally a market owned and operated me, so I can have a place to sell items I occasionally offer from my own garden. There’s no board of directors, no shield corporation, no pot of grant money. It’s just me, and while that keeps things very simple, it also exposes my family to a ton of potential liability. There are several things I do specifically to minimize that risk:

  • The growers list their own items and set their own prices. When you buy from them, it is from them, not from me, and not from The Cumming Harvest.
  • The Cumming Harvest never takes ownership or possession of the food. The growers drop it off, and you pick it up.
  • Everything at the market has a customer’s name attached to it when it arrives. TCH does not repackage any items.
  • When you pay, you’re paying into a shared cash box for all of the growers. This lets you write a single check or swipe your card once for convenience, but you are really paying all of the growers directly and individually. Your money goes in, and the software keeps everything going spits out checks for each of the growers you buy from.
  • The growers give a small percentage of their sales, 10%, back to the market to cover the many expenses of keeping the market going. I’ll cover the details of finances another week.
  • TCH never buys from a grower and resells the items to you. Although I do take group orders and purchase from out of state items that we can’t get in GA. Things like butter, cheese, cod liver oil, etc.
  • When a grower sells items that need licenses from either the state or the federal government, TCH verifies that the proper licenses have been obtained.

In the following weeks, I’ll get more into the nuts and bolts of finances and other aspects of how we work. Many of the decisions I make for the market are based on how the founding market, Athens Locally Grown, is run. The ALG market manager is also the web developer for the website and is in their 15th year of running. We hope to be around for that long too. :)
